Metronidazole is a widely used antibiotic that is used to cure several diseases. Anyone can purchase it in a physical pharmacy or for convenience, metronidazole available here.  But how does it work? What are the side effects? Would it work better than other antibiotics that cure the same disease? Is it safe for pregnant women? To answer the questions, here are some facts about metronidazole:

How it works?

If patients are prescribed with metronidazole, they will taste a certain bitterness in their mouth. Their doctors would recommend that they take it for seven days, three times a day. The World Health Organization has considered metronidazole as one of the safest and most effective medicines. Medical practitioners would rarely use other types of medicine because the success rate it is considerably lower. The metronidazole will disrupt the DNA of the bacteria. It is even safe enough to be taken by pregnant women. Doctors have prescribed it to prevent preterm birth. They would also recommend that the partners of their patients take this antibiotic as well even if they do not suffer any symptoms. But it cannot stop preterm delivery of high risk pregnancy.

What are the side effects?

The most common side effects of this medicine is nausea. Other than that, those who are taking this medicine would also experience diarrhea and severe stomach pain. They might even suffer from vomiting. This will lead to weight loss. Beside those side effects, the patient can suffer dizziness. They might even have a metallic after taste in their mouth. Those who are taking it intravenously would suffer from thrombophlebitis. This can be associated still with nausea, diarrhea and vomiting. But it can include fever, rashes, glossitis, stomatitis and dark urine. Those who are allergic to metronidazole can dryness and redness of skin. There is also a possibility that it can cause mood swings as it can bring about serotonin syndrome. But this has not been proven yet.  There is also a possibility that it can be carcinogenic.

The benefits that one can reap from metronidazole is numerous. Studies have shown that it is far more effective than its counterpart that are used to cure the same diseases. Although it has a lot of adverse effects, the health benefits outweigh the negative effects. For those who have been prescribed with metronidazole, they do not want to physically go to a pharmacy.
